What this policy covers

This policy explains what information is collected when you use this website and its northern lights, solar flare and space weather tools (the “Site”), how it is used, and the choices you have. “We” and “us” mean the operator of the Site. By using the Site you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

What we collect

Information you provide

• City searches. When you type a city into a forecast tool, the text you enter is used to look up its coordinates.
• Your device location. If you press “Use my location”, your browser asks for permission first. If you allow it, your coordinates are used to find your nearest place and your local forecast. If you refuse, nothing is sent.
• Messages. If you contact us, we receive the name, email address and message you send, and we use them only to reply.

Information collected automatically

• Server logs. Like most websites, our hosting provider records technical details of each request, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit, the time, and the address of the page that referred you. These logs help keep the Site running and secure.
• Information seen by the services our tools use. When your browser contacts the third-party services listed below, they can see your IP address and browser details, as any website you visit can.

We do not ask for, and do not knowingly collect, sensitive information such as financial details, health information or government identifiers.

How the location features work

The forecast tools run in your browser and contact data providers directly. In practice:

1. If you type a city, your browser sends that text to the OpenStreetMap Nominatim service, which returns coordinates. If you use “Use my location”, your browser sends your coordinates to the same service to get the name of the nearest place.
2. Your browser then sends the coordinates of the selected place to OpenWeatherMap and Open-Meteo to get local weather, sunrise and sunset times, and cloud forecasts.
3. Space weather data and maps come from NOAA. These requests do not include your location.
4. The tools combine the results on your screen. We do not receive or store your searches or your coordinates on our own servers.

You can use the Site without sharing your device location by typing a city instead.

Third-party services

These services process the information described when you use the tools. Each has its own privacy practices, which we do not control.

We also use a web hosting provider and the WordPress platform to run the Site. They process the technical information described above on our behalf.

Cookies, browser storage and shared links

• Browser storage. The forecast tools save the location you choose in your browser’s local storage, so you do not have to enter it on every visit. This stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can remove it by clearing the Site’s data in your browser settings.
• Cookies. The tools do not use cookies. Our website platform, hosting provider or security tools may set cookies that are needed to run and protect the Site. If we add analytics or advertising tools in the future, we will update this policy and, where the law requires, ask for your consent first.
• Shared links. When you search for a city, the address in your browser may update to include the city name (for example, ?city=Calgary) so that you can bookmark or share the page. If you share that link, the city name is visible to anyone who sees it, and it appears in server logs when the link is opened.

How we use information

• To provide the forecasts and tools and show results for your location.
• To keep the Site secure, prevent abuse and fix technical problems.
• To understand and improve how the Site performs, using server logs and similar technical information.
• To reply to messages you send us.
• To meet legal obligations.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases are our legitimate interests in running and securing the Site, your consent when you allow your browser to share your location, and compliance with legal obligations.

Sharing, transfers and retention

• Sharing. We share information only with the service providers described above, when the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety and security of the Site and its users. We do not sell the information described in this policy.
• International transfers. The services above operate in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, so your information may be processed outside the country where you live.
• Retention. Server logs are kept for a limited period set by our hosting provider. Messages are kept only as long as needed to reply and keep a reasonable record. Third-party services keep information under their own policies.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how it is used, to withdraw consent, and to receive a copy of it. Because the tools run in your browser and we do not keep your searches or coordinates, there is usually very little for us to provide, but you can contact us and we will respond within the time the law allows.

• Location. You can decline your browser’s location prompt, change the permission in your browser settings at any time, or type a city instead.
• Saved location. Clear the Site’s data in your browser to remove it.
• Canada. You may ask us for access to your personal information and challenge its accuracy, and you may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
• EEA and UK. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
• California and other US states. Where state law gives you rights over your personal information, you may exercise them by contacting us. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Security and children

We take reasonable steps to protect information, but no website or internet transmission is completely secure. The Site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

The Site links to other websites, including NOAA and other sources. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices, so please read their policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Site or the law changes. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Please check it from time to time.
